Praise God my sisters and brothers in Christ,

A story is told in JOHN 8:3-11 about the encounter of Jesus and the woman caught in the act of adultery.

The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in the act of adultery to Jesus.

They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery and the Law of Moses command us to stone such women. Now what do you say?”

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.

Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said.

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

I will appreciate honest response. Thank you.

  1. Casting the first stone for those who have not sinned; the Pharisees could not ignore that they are sinful. Thank you Cynthia for this post! We can surmised but we will really know someday in heaven what JESUS wrote on the ground and why only the woman was targeted and not the man who also committed adultery. By Law, both will be stoned. JESUS is a merciful Savior for He spared the woman and He spared us from damnation. Blessings to you and your family!

    1. Thank you so much for taking time to answer, I sincerely appreciate. I agree with you that most of the questions we ask, will make sense once we get to Heaven. The best thing is just to thrive to get there. Thank you so much.

I always Imagine Jesus must have blotted the woman’s name from the book hell and went back down to write it in the book of life, whats your guess?

  2. Interesting question sis.
Firstly, it was a very patriarchal society and as such women would not have much of a voice and so easier to blame and use for their purpose. Which in this case was more about trying to trap Jesus who preached love and mercy. So the Pharisees were trying to make Jesus publicly say something against the law.
By the law mentioned in Deuteronomy, the punishment of stoning was to meted our to both the man and woman.
    Jesus knew their motive.
We can speculate but only the woman being targeted reminds us in that time when women were dependent on a man for identity and standing in society. Society in that sense failed her and publicly shamed her. But that day in Jesus She found her new identity and freedom.
Look to Jesus to find true belonging.

Well anyway , the main point I always take from this sorry is not to judge other but extend grace and forgiveness because we ourselves are sinful creatures and in Him we find mercy and forgiveness.

      1. We can never know for sure. But what I take away is this – when everyone around is probably raising their voices, demanding justice, yelling and trying to blame and trap Jesus , He chooses not to react to them and bends down and scribbles with His finger. The finger of God in exodus and Deuteronomy is mentioned with relation to the writing of the Ten Commandments. Similarly when we face accusation, blame or even anger, may we shift our focus away from that which can stir us to react in a wrong way and turn to Gods word and it will give us wisdom and help us deal with whatever we have to face.

      2. So true,

Maybe that is How the writers of the bible found the exact words of Jesus. There are version of the bible where the words of Jesus are written in red, maybe we are not told but JESUS took time to write down most times.

Matters of the kingdom of God are deep.

Thank you for fellowshiping with me sis.

      3. I didn’t mean to say that Jesus wrote things literally like that. I just take it as an indication of where I should focus- His word. Just clarifying 🙂.
Thank you for having this conversation. It is fun and so much of value isn’t it.

  3. I’ve often wondered the same thing. I figure and it’s totally supposition, it was men wanting her condemned. Another possibility, her accusers may have thought Jesus would show her sympathy. But you notice, Jesus didn’t ask the whereabouts of the man. At this point it didn’t really matter.

  4. Amen! This is one of my favorite stories in the Bible. Our sinless Lord does not condemn anyone. Therefore, we who were born in sin should not condemn each other. Thank you for sharing and thanks for visiting and commenting on my blog. Your blog is amazing and I enjoyed reading your posts.
