The pandemic and the inactivity occasioned by the lockdown and stay home/work from home mantra has led to many of us feeding on everything and anything available without burning the same out through necessary physical engagement. In some estates within my city-Nairobi, you’ll meet people trying to burn out excess fat through some walks and runs around the streets.

Many if not most of us reading this devotion could be overweight and in urgent need to shed off some weight! The interest ” weight loss” generates in our generation, especially amongst the middle and upper class is evident. All manner of drugs, pills, treatments and exercises are being peddled to deal with weight lose! I confess that I’m a victim, and there are enough reminders around me that the Covid-19 virus thrives on overweight people.

Health experts have explained to us over and over again the serious and real dangers of donning an overweight mass of body !

But wait a minute, ever wondered why most serious sportsmen and women are never overweight ? How come most of them work on their bodies to shed off every unnecessary body mass? How come their dressing during a race is also done in a manner that further reduces any unnecessary weight?

” Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every weight that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,” Heb 12:1

The verse above states to us that each of us has a specific race marked for us which should practically occupy and determine every aspect of our lives…its the race of faith.

The verse indicates two very different hindrances that bog us down and prevent us from running the race well. Yeah, most of us are well aware of the meaning of sin and its frustrations to this race, but are we just as aware of this other besetter indicated here ; “weight”?

A weight is anything and everything that slows us down from our prescribed run. The expression “every weight” tells us that weights are manifold; there can be many, and they can be diverse.

A weight is not sin. There are many things we do as Christians that hinder our run even though those things in and of themselves are not wrong.

The apostle Paul put it this way: “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.” (1 Corinthians 10:23)

There are no much rules about how you must dress when participating in a race, but simply because it is lawful for you to wear what you will, that certainly does not advocate donning a heavy coat and cumbersome footwear ! Such choices, while legal, do nothing but oppress the runner from running to win.

Each of us know the things in our lives that are weighing us down from the race God has called us to. Perhaps you are wearing the heavy coat of an unhealthy friendship, or the burdensome shoes of idle entertainment. Perhaps it is your overzealous work ethic, or your all-too-undisciplined bed habits. Such things drain our physical, mental and spiritual energy.

These things, while not sin themselves, keep us from fulfilling the will of God in our lives, and may become gateways that lead us into sin.

Help me name some common weights in our generation ; unnecessary friendships, some conversations, social media, Over occupation with political news ( of late), visiting relatives and friends on church fellowship hours, watching movies, online chats, some dressing, etc…..help me name some more…especially those brought by the pandemic season!

The race marked for you is a race of destiny ! Please identify and shed off every weight that affects your race negatively! Protect, guard and preserve your efficiency to run the race of faith well especially in this season.

Hope this day and week is not filled up with such weights?

Have a good day !

  1. Dear Cynthia, this is such a wonderful word. There can be so many things that weigh us down that can go unnoticed. Your post made me pause and think of things that might be doing that to my spiritual race.
Bless you my dear friend for sharing this powerful and necessary word.
    Manu 💙.

    1. Amen and Amen my sister

I am blessed that the word of God has found a habitation in your heart.

But…You didn’t add some of the weights though…

Anyway, I appreciate your feedback and the Lord bless you and keep you in perfect peace!

  2. Eating because we are bored is very common & unhealthy if it becomes a habit. Through the last few months we have all experienced things that we never thought we would. I urge you to not neglect your spiritual or physical health. Seek help for any issues that you have & stay close to the Father.
