IF JESUS CAME BACK TODAY, WOULD YOU GO TO HEAVEN?

Yesterday over lunch hour break we had a discussion with my colleague. I was telling her how devastating it was to lose my uncle through CORONA Virus and she got concerned, her main problem was, what if she dies too? She worried for her young family.

Contrary to me, I donโ€™t fear death, I only fear dying and not making it to Heaven. For me that is hopeless. My remaining family are still alive, they can repent and live right but for me in that state my time is gone, there is nothing that can be undone. To me that is hopeless.

She went ahead to ask me whether it is possible to be sure you are prepared for the second coming of Jesus and I told her this, โ€œwhen I am living right I know, and on days that I have backslid into comfort zone too I know and it is easy to come back to the place where I was beforeโ€.

We continued to discuss how to prepare for the second coming of Jesus and we delved into a very deep emotional conversation and she repented and I led her to Christ and she decided from yesterday she would be doing bible study with her family each night and she was to deliberately change certain aspects of her life.

Today, I feel obliged to share with you the same message I shared with her and I hope you will be blessed.

Remember when we preach about the second coming of Jesus we are not to scare you, No! we are preaching HOPE! Because there is hope for the living. Only the dead cannot hear this message and repent. For the living, the message on the second coming of Jesus is a message of Hope.

OUR REFERENCE SCRIPTURE IS: Mark 13:24-37

It says;

24 โ€œBut in those days, following that distress,

โ€œโ€˜the sun will be darkened,
    and the moon will not give its light;
25 the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.โ€™

26 โ€œAt that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.

28 โ€œNow learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

The Day and Hour Unknown

32 โ€œBut about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert[c]! You do not know when that time will come. 34 Itโ€™s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.

35 โ€œTherefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come backโ€”whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: โ€˜Watch!โ€™โ€

Friends, Jesus is coming again. Personally and visibly, He is coming back. In power and glory, He will return to consummate His redemptive mission and to establish His eternal kingdom.

Bible-believing Christians may disagree on some details surrounding the end times, but on this we can agree: Jesus is coming again.

As we approach this passage, letโ€™s first remind ourselves that the primary purpose of the Bibleโ€™s teachings on end time events is not merely to satisfy our curiosity. Rather, it is to reveal how to live now in light of future events.

As you read through Mark 13, look for the exhortationsโ€”watch out, be on guard, stay awake!Note especially the final verse of the chapter, where Jesus said this: โ€œAnd what I say to you, I say to everyone: โ€œWatchโ€ meaning โ€œBe alert!โ€ (v. 37).

The Greek word translated โ€œbe alertโ€ (โ€œstay awake,โ€ โ€œwatchโ€) is the very last word of the chapter, and Jesusโ€™ final word on this subject in Markโ€™s Gospel. It is where the emphasis lies in Mark 13. The recurring theme of Scripture concerning the second coming is to be ready, and Scripture is not silent on how to prepare:

1. ACCEPT THE UNCERTAINTIES – Be content with the fact that โ€œno one knowsโ€ฆ

โ€œNow concerning that day or hour no one knowsโ€”neither the angels in heaven nor the Sonโ€‹โ€”but only the Father.

Watch! Be alert! For you donโ€™t know when the time is comingโ€ (Mark 13:32-33).

If Jesus was content not to know the day or hour, then letโ€™s stop speculating about it. Be content with โ€œno one knows โ€ฆ only the Father.โ€

2. LIVE IN THE LIGHT OF HIS FIRST COMING.

Do you want to be prepared for Jesusโ€™ second coming? Then live like His first coming mattered.

Jesus spoke parables about His return. In Luke 19:11-27, He told about a nobleman who traveled to a far country to become king. This nobleman called ten of his servants, gave them each a mina (coin), and told them: โ€œengage in my business until I come backโ€ (v. 13). After an unspecified duration of time, the nobleman returned as king and summoned his servants to give an account of their faithfulness. The first two servants had been productive with what was entrusted to them. But another servant had done nothing. He simply wrapped his mina in a cloth and hid it. His mistake was that he didnโ€™t act on what he professed to believe. He professed something about his master but didnโ€™t live by his profession, and lost his reward (vv. 21-23).

Those who profess Christ as Lord and live according to their profession will receive great reward when Jesus returns.

3. BE DISCERNING.

Twice in Mark 13 Jesus warned His disciples not to be led astray by false claim: โ€œWatch out that no one deceives youโ€ฆ false prophets will arise and will perform signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, the electโ€ (Mark 13: 5-6,21-22).

Paul warned, โ€œNow concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to himโ€ฆ. Donโ€™t let anyone deceive you in any wayโ€ (2 Thess. 2:1-3).

The warning of Scripture is consistent: use discernment in listening to those who claim to have all the details of the end times figured out, and ignore those who resort to date setting end time events.

4. DONโ€™T LOSE HOPE.

Paul reminded Titus that Jesusโ€™ first coming brought salvation and it instructs us how to live โ€œsensible, righteous, and godlyโ€ lives in this present age. It is our โ€œblessed hopeโ€โ€”the expectation of Jesusโ€™ returnโ€”that compels us to do so (Titus 2:11-13).

5. ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER.

The promise that โ€œthe Lord will descend from heaven with a shoutโ€ in 1 Thessalonians 4:16 is followed by a command: โ€œTherefore encourage one another with these wordsโ€ (1 Thess. 4:18).

Again, the affirmation that โ€œthe day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the nightโ€ (1 Thess. 5:2) is followed by the exhortation: โ€œTherefore encourage one another and build each other upโ€ (1st Thess.5:11).

Scriptureโ€™s teachings about the second coming are not given to satisfy our personal fascination with future events but that the body of Christ might encourage one another with the promises.

6. LIVE AS IF TODAY WAS THE DAY.

If weโ€™re not careful, the delay in Jesusโ€™ return will lead us to complacency.

Living in the expectation that He could return today compels us to live every day for what really mattersโ€”for eternity.

7. KEEP ON DOING THE WORK JESUS LEFT US TO DO.

Jesus warned of troubling events as we near the end of the age, including persecution of believers (Mark 13:7-9).

Then He added that nothingโ€”not even persecutionโ€”should distract us from the one necessary thing: preach to the gospel to all nations (Mark 13:10).

Before ascending into heaven, Jesus gave the church its marching orders: โ€œBut you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earthโ€ (Acts 1:8). The very next verses report that the disciples just stood there looking up into the sky. Two angels appeared and spoke the words the church today needs to hear: Why are you standing there gazing into heaven? Jesus is coming backโ€”so get busy! (Acts 1 :9-11).

Conclusion

Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed–not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence–continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,

(Philippians 2:12)
