Welcome to today’s blog as we conclude our series on dealing with baggage. We are going to handle THE BAGGAGE OF WOUNDS.I hope you have been here since we began and you have benefitted.
To start with, kindly pause and answer the following questions;
- What are some of the things that your parents/guardians did that hurt you?
- Have you ever resolved the issues between you and them?
WOUNDS FROM PARENTS/GUARDIANS
3.Abusive fathers (physically, verbally, emotionally, sexually)
5.Fathers behaving badly
3.Abusive partners (physically, verbally, emotionally, sexually)
5.Partners behaving badly
- Religious leaders
Hebrews 12:15 says:
“Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.” (NLT)
Wounds are developed in the following succession:
- The seed of offence is sown
- The soil of insecurity receives it
- The root of bitterness takes place
- The fruit of resentment is produced
1. THE SEED OF OFFENCE
- What others have said to us (abusive, controlling)
- What others have not said to us (absent, passive)
- What others have done to us (abusive, controlling, behaving badly)
- What others have not done to us (absent, passive)
2. THE ROOT OF BITTERNESS
From Hebrews 12:15 we can clearly see the root of bitterness described as follows;
- It is poisonous because it eats you from the inside
- It grows and gets worse with time
- It troubles you in the form of jealousy and anger
- It corrupts many these include such things as Gossip and spewing
3. THE FRUIT OF RESENTMENT
Resentment refers to deep bitter anger and ill-will. The Results include:
- Illness-high blood pressure, ulcers, panic attacks
- Toxic parenting
- Toxic marriages
- Generational baggage
The Good news is,
HOPE IS NOT LOST.
Rev. Peter Tan Chi once said, “You can’t choose your ancestors but you can influence your descendants.” Therefore, if you continue blaming your background, your back will always be on the ground.
HOW TO BE FREE FROM BAGGAGES
The answer is, FORGIVE
- Understanding forgiveness because how can you forgive if you don’t know about forgiveness?
- Counting the cost of bitterness
- Remember the Gospel
- Settle accounts
1. UNDERSTAND FORGIVENESS
Forgiveness is giving up the right to be even. Forgiveness is for you. Forgiveness is opening the prison gates only to discover that you were the prisoner. Forgiveness is not endorsing offence Forgiveness is not allowing evil to go scot free. Forgiveness doesn’t mean you won’t remember the pain. Forgiveness is the ONLY way to be FREE
2. COUNT THE COST OF BITTERNESS
Pain is never forever, unless you allow it. Suffering can grow your character no suffering is wasted. Your baggage is decreased when your relationships are working and finally guard your heart because you only have one heart.
3. REMEMBER THE GOSPEL
Do you remember THE PARABLE OF THE UNFORGIVING SERVANT? Let’s Read Matthew 18:21-35 it says:
21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.
23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.
26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.
29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’
30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.
32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”
4. SETTLE ACCOUNTS
Ask God to forgive you for your un-forgiveness. Apologize to those you have hurt. Have mercy on those that have wronged you. Contact those you are upset with and forgive them. Write a letter to those you cannot contact, stating your hurt and offering forgiveness and burn the letter. Have a whole person pray for you (James 5:16 says Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
Finally, forgive as often as the pain resurfaces because you will always find triggers and resurface hurt so you need to forgive as the hurt comes.
HOW TO STAY FREE FROM BAGGAGE
- Constantly meditate on the Gospel
- Till the soil of insecurity
- Sow good seed
1. CONSTANTLY MEDITATE ON THE GOSPEL
Our sinful hearts always want to return to Egypt and we must remember the joy of the promised land. Read the four gospels frequently, find a gospel-centered church, avoid the prosperity gospel and false teachers and remember to share the good news, the bible says in 1st Peter 5:9, Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. Therefore, when you share the word of God with other believers, that word will give them life and joy and that same life and joy inside of them, they will radiate it towards you. Many ministers of the word will tell you that they got deliverance in the process of ministering the word of God. When the word of God leaves your heart, it has to perform His divine purpose over your life first before it delivers the next person.
2. TILL THE SOIL OF INSECURITY
We can change our soil by feeding our soul and spirit. Develop a daily prayer life. Join a gospel-centered community Bible study. Read gospel-centered books. Listen to gospel-centered music and I say this categorically because most of the gospel music we have today aren’t necessarily preaching the gospel. The world of music has become money oriented and gospel ministers go worldly in order to gain wealth and popularity. That is not our topic for today.
Finally, do away with insecurity-filled entertainment. You can’t be going through heartbreak and watch an emotional movie where the main character you identify with is going through a heartbreak too.
3. SOW GOOD SEED
If we want new fruit, we must get new root and the good seed is the WORD OF GOD. How do we sow the good seed?
- Reading the word
Revelation 1:3 says Blessed is the one who READS ALOUD the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who HEAR IT AND TAKE TO HEART what is written in it, because the time is near.
- Hearing the word
Take time to listen to great preachers online. Romans 10:17 says, Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
- Studying the word
Acts 17:11 says Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness AND EXAMINED THE SCRIPTURES EVERY DAY to see if what Paul said was true.
- Meditating on the word
Psalm 1:1-2 says, Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or set foot on the path of sinners, or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law HE MEDITATES DAY AND NIGHT.
- Memorize the word
Psalm 119:9-11 says How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments. YOUR WORD I HAVE TREASURED IN MY HEART, That I may not sin against You.
Jesus our greatest Example, memorized the word of God and used it to fight the attack of the enemy in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights. How much you and me? We need to store the word of God in our hearts in order to win every battle of the enemy. The enemy picks the memories of hurt you have gone through in your life and uses those memories against you and only the word of God can cause shifting in the atmosphere whenever the enemy attacks in the day or in the night when all you have is your pillow to cry on.
LET ME LEAVE YOU WITH MY FAVORITE VERSE:
For the word of God is ALIVE AND ACTIVE. SHARPER than any double-edged sword, it PENETRATES EVEN TO DIVIDING SOUL AND SPIRIT, joints and marrow; it JUDGES THE THOUGHTS AND ATTITUDES OF THE HEART.
Wish you all the best as you purpose to shade off the baggage’s.
