Blessings to you my viewers,
Do you know Goshen?
Is it your first time meeting Goshen?
Do you want to enter Goshen?
Or, you are in Goshen already?
Let’s find out.
If you were born in the time of Moses, you would never wish to be an Egyptian. For when Pharaoh hardened his heart in releasing Israel from slavery, God sent 10 plagues to nudge him toward that decision. Frogs, flies, locusts swarmed all over Egypt, except in the land of GOSHEN.
“But on that day, I will deal differently with the land of Goshen, where my people live, no swarms of flies will be there, so that you will know that I, I the Lord, am in this land. I will make a distinction between my people and your people.” (Exodus 8:22-23)
Goshen became a specially blessed land at the time plagues and curses prevailed over Egypt. Exodus 10:23 records that;
Even when the whole land got covered with thick darkness and no one could see anyone for three days, Goshen alone had light in their dwellings
In other words, at that time, poor cottages of Israelites were much better haven than the mansions and palaces of Egyptians.
Now that you know GOSHEN, or maybe you are saying to yourself, “I wanna be in Goshen”, Relax,let’s cast our net deep into the sea and find out why Goshen was considered the best part in all of Egypt.
WHY IS GOSHEN CONSIDERED THE BEST PART OF ALL EGYPT?
Genesis 47:5-6 says;
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you,and the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the BEST PART OF THE LAND. Let them live in GOSHEN. And if you know of any among them with special ability, put them in charge of my own livestock.”
Goshen was considered the best part in all of Egypt Because, it was conducive for vegetation and raising herds due to its proximity to the Nile River. It was given to the Israelites through the favor of Pharaoh to Joseph who was then second in command in Egypt. Genesis 46:29 says; When Joseph saw his father and brothers coming, he got on his chariot and went out to meet them. He fell on his father’s neck and wept a very long time. Goshen can be seen as a place of new beginnings. New things were about to happen. The future looked bright and exciting for Joseph and His family.The LORD was with Joseph. He settled his family in the best of the land and provided and supplied his father, his brothers and all their households with an abundance of food during the days of the famine. Let me pose to you this question, Is your dream big enough to provide for those who have abused and misused you? Take time to think and answer that.
Friends, Years of ease became years of pain and sufferings as the favored Israelites became resented slaves who cried out to God for their salvation. God sent Moses who showed them that GOD’s PRESENCE ALONE COULD BRING LIBERTY FROM OPPRESSION. He made a distinction between Goshen the place where His presence was and the rest of Egypt by showing His power and glory to His mockers but blessing, favor, and grace to His disheartened people. While some Israelites are excited to leave the place and go to the Promised Land, initial reactions to the manifest plagues are panic and confusion. Some dread the idea of leaving their old environment and venture into unfamiliar lands.Despite their hesitations, God understands the reason for their indifference towards freedom. He knows that long years of extreme slavery has brought them to doubt His ability to keep them safe and sheltered. He sees the need for them to know His love is ever present even in tough times and so He protected them in the small land of GOSHEN.
WHAT CAN WE LEARN ABOUT GOSHEN?
The tough times brought about by calamities and crises oppress the people today with uncertainties and fears. People become captive to trepidations that they forget to recognize how God provides a “land of Goshen” for all those who put their trust on Him. Proverbs 29:25 says,
Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.
God’s people who are living in faith should never be afraid of tough times. Rough times may not last, but the presence of God can abide forever to bring tremendous assurance of His constant provision and deliverance.
God said, “Fear not for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are MINE. When you pass through the waters, I WILL BE WITH YOU; and when you pass through the rivers, THEY WILL NOT SWEEP OVER YOU. When you walk through the fire, YOU WILL NOT BE BURNED; the flames WILL NOT SET YOU ABLAZE. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…” (Isaiah 43:2-3a, NIV).
God is setting a distinct mark on His peoples. While plagues and calamities bring confusion to other people, God’s people are secured when they put their hope and trust to the Living God. Those who are rife with faith can enter the land of Goshen, but those who doubt God’s mighty power and boast of their earthly positions, titles, and wealth cannot enter “Goshen”. The special covering of God is reserved only for people who have placed their resolute trust in the Lord.Psalm 28:8 says;
“The Lord is the strength of His people, a fortress of salvation for his anointed one.”
